Growing up in the Episcopal Church, the Doxology was an oft-sung hymn of praise. Even now, its sacred refrain and familiar melody provide a place of center and focus in my ever-changing world. I recall a heavenly moment in Jamaica when a visiting team gathered in our new dining hall in the building below our apartment to conduct their morning devotions. Concluding with the Doxology, their unaccompanied voices resonated in the unfurnished hall, and the celestial sound echoed out of the open windows of the cement-blocked building. It seemed as if heaven itself joined their voices, as praises to God rang out across New Vision’s acreage. It was a holy moment.

At New Vision City of Refuge, we enjoyed the diverse ministry teams of college students and youth groups, construction workers and homemakers, teachers and mechanics. Although most teams were from our own fellowship, Lutherans, Episcopalians, Baptists, and Methodists were also among our visitors. Interestingly, even though each group preferred a particular style of music, the one song that everyone knew was the Doxology. Seemingly, when personality and preferences may conflict and divide, sacred anthems effectively transcend and unite.

I have been devoting much of my time recently meditating on the Doxology. When I consider the changes and transitions God is leading my family through, I need the Doxology to focus my attention on praise and adoration of the Holy One who transcends time and eternity. Recently, the Lord has made it clear to us that our season of ministry in Jamaica has concluded. I pray you understand what a difficult time we have had accepting this; we are grieving our loss.

However, the Lord has not left us without hope or direction. We are now preparing to reach the orphans and students of our neighboring country as missionaries to Mexico. I fervently ask that you continue to pray and support us through this challenging transition. We have much to accomplish before language school starts on August 26, in Costa Rica. Within the next few days, we are traveling to Jamaica to retrieve our personal belongings, sell our furniture, and say goodbye to our beloved New Vision family. Upon our return to Indiana, we will only have two days to pack for language school. We need you now more than ever.

I am so thankful for the magnificent God that we serve and for the Body of Christ; for no matter where we are in the world, right now we can all join and sing:

The Call

The Call, written by Regina Spektor for the movie Prince Caspian is a stirring anthem played at the end of the movie when the Pevensie children leave Narnia, some for the last time. Others though, leave knowing they shall return, eventually.

Interestingly, Spektor’s reference to battle and the war in her song is possibly a metaphor expressing the inner conflict between leaving a place of familiarity and entering a world you always longed for or desired. This desire, described in the opening verse begins as a feeling, grows into a hope, turns into thought, and then turns into a quiet word which ultimately grows louder and louder, ‘til it becomes a battle cry. In other words, the call to Narnia (and relationship with Aslan) becomes so strong it cannot be ignored only obeyed.

In our travels and speaking engagements, many have asked about our call to missions. Personally, I have never had a call to missions or to a particular country, per say. Rather, I describe my call as a call to obedience; Jesus said, “Come follow me,” and so I did, to the best of my ability. Hence, Stuart and I obeyed God’s call and four years ago, we followed Jesus to Jamaica.

Last year, when our family parted with our New Vision family we tried not to say “Goodbye,” but rather “We’ll be back as soon as we can.” However, Stuart and I have been in holding pattern, waiting for the call to return to Jamaica. Waiting is often not an easy discipline, but since it is our desire to complete what we began in Jamaica by serving the children and students of New Vision City of Refuge and the Assemblies of God Bible College we wait. We are confident that the Lord is the only one in control of our lives and the timing of our return.

In the meanwhile, we consider the words of Spektor’s song, especially the final verse.

Now we're back to the beginning

First Honors

Dorothy Sayers’ observations on the presence of women in Jesus’ life and ministry are insightful and accurate. “Perhaps it is no wonder that the women were first at the Cradle and last at the Cross. They had never known a man like this Man - there has never been such another. A prophet and teacher who never nagged at them; never flattered or coaxed or patronized; who never made arch jokes about them . . .

“Who took their questions and arguments seriously; who never mapped out their sphere for them; never urged them to be feminine or jeered at them for being female; who had no axe to grind and no uneasy male dignity to defend; who took them as he found them and was completely unselfconscious.”

Correspondingly, the Gospel writers portray Jesus as unusually compassionate and sensitive towards women. Indeed, the incarnate Christ validated and respected women; never treating them as inferior or unfairly. We find in the Bible, a God who entrusts women with great responsibility and bestows on them the honor of many firsts.

Women were first at the cradle of Jesus. When confronted by the angel with the promise of the Christ-child, Mary believes the word of the Lord and humbly accepts this responsibility. This is no small matter. The Sovereign Lord could have chosen to allow the incarnate Christ to appear out of nowhere. Yet instead he chose to entrust a young Jewish girl with carrying his Son the Messiah, and raising him as well.

Later in life, Jesus travels through Samaria. Resting at a well he initiates a conversation with a woman in the middle of the day. Notably, the spiritual content of the dialogue between Jesus and the Samaritan woman is no less weighty than Jesus’ conversation with the rabbinically trained Nicodemas the chapter before. For her part the Samaritan woman asks some very spiritually perceptive questions and Jesus responds thoughtfully.

Jesus deems the Samaritan woman capable of comprehending and assimilating deep spiritual truths. Truths that prompt her to tell those in her town about Jesus and subsequently many believe. A Samaritan woman is her country’s first evangelist.

Women were also the first to arrive at Jesus’ tomb. They were the first to witness the resurrection, the first commissioned to go and tell, “He is not here, he has risen!”What a great honor God bestowed on women by commanding them to be the first preachers of the resurrection.

Two thousand years ago, Jesus modeled for us how to respect and value women for he knows their worth.

Why is it then that domestic violence affects 25% of the female population worldwide? Why is it then that 80% of Jamaica’s children are born out of wedlock? Why is it then that 3 million girls are at risk each year for female genital mutilation? Why is it then that human trafficking is the third most profitable criminal activity around the globe? Church, this should not be.

The value and worth God places on women is undeniable. But let me be perfectly clear, to validate and respect women is not to invalidate or disrespect men. Women and men together reflect the image of God, and in Christ, we share an immeasurable inheritance. All I ask Church is that we continue to do what Jesus began. For I believe how we treat women is a reflection of our relationship with and our understanding of God.

At New Vision City of Refuge we strive to model for and teach our young girls their value and worth in God’s eyes. Many have been abused and deal with the effects of abandonment. But with the healing power of the Holy Spirit, and your prayers and support, we can open their eyes to their God-given value and worth.

The Missionary Spirit

On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit powerfully descended upon the awaiting faithful, in response to a promise given by Jesus prior to his ascension. In a few days, you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit . . . [and] you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. The nature of that power remarkably makes Jesus’ disciples effective witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

Although it is tempting to believe that Jesus’ commission to all nations is a new development in the missio Dei, it is not. The mission of God has always included the nations beyond the called and faithful remnant. What is new is the promise of power to expedite the mission.

This power though, is not the consequence of an inanimate energy source but rather the manifestation of the Spirit of Christ. No less than the abiding presence and power of the Holy Spirit is adequate to accomplish this exceptional mission to all nations.

To accept the gift of the Spirit as they did at Pentecost and throughout Acts, necessitates an intentional missions objective, for the purpose of Pentecost is to clothe believers with power to be witnesses to all the nations. For a believer to claim to be filled with the Spirit and yet have no inclination for the mission of Jesus is at the very least a contradiction of reason and at most a travesty of purpose. To ask for the baptism of the Holy Spirit intrinsically implies that the recipient of the gift accepts the mission, the method, and the power to go to the ends of the earth!

No April Fool

Stuart and Wendy, Paul and Dulcie, Jordan and Becky

When Stuart and I returned to the States to raise our support, the Lord provided two exceptional couples to continue the ministry at New Vision City of Refuge. Jordan and Becky Yoder served as farm manager and registered nurse, respectively. On April 1, Jordan and Becky will complete their term of service and return home. Thank you Jordan and Becky for your hard work and sacrifice. You have been a tremendous blessing to us, the Bushhorn family, and the staff and children at New Vision City of Refuge Children’s Home.

Fasting and Freedom

Lent is a season of prayer and intentional fasting. As we know, fasting is a discipline that well--takes discipline. For those of us who enjoy three meals a day and a few snacks whenever we please, then fasting can be a disruption to a pleasant and desirable routine. Nevertheless, the fruit of fasting is rewarding in numerous ways.

The people of Isaiah’s day also fasted and anticipated God’s appropriate response to their self-denial. However, the Lord seemed ambivalent and inattentive to their actions. Why have we fasted and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves and you have not noticed?

Contrary to their belief, God did notice but was displeased at their display, for their fasting opposed God’s purposes. On the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers . . . your fasting ends in quarreling and strife . . . is this what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord? Their actions incurred an indictment instead of a reward, because their spiritual discipline did not connect their faith with their works.

Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the bonds of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—when you see the naked, to clothe him? -Isaiah 58:6-7

God is pleased with fasting that provides a home for the homeless, shares food with the hungry, and sets the captive free! When we fast, truly fast, we become aware not only of our own need but also of the needs of the suffering and desolate around us. Furthermore, the fruit of fasting causes us to do something about it. Our faith must determine our work.

Officials estimate that there are 14,000 homeless children on the small island of Jamaica. Many of these children left home because of abuse. Most will beg or scrounge for food to survive today, and many do not have an extra change of clothes. As we fast this Lenten season, let us remember with compassion the displaced children of Jamaica, for only when we choose to recognize the suffering will we also participate in relieving it.

At New Vision City of Refuge Children’s Home, we have not only considered the plight of the mistreated, we are doing something about it. Please prayerfully consider a financial gift to the home or become a sponsor of a child on a monthly basis so that together we may put our faith to work and loose the chains of injustice.

Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he well say: Here am I. -Isaiah 58:8-9

A Good Investment

The economic conditions of today have forced many to evaluate and reconsider the way they spend, save, and invest their resources. This is not necessarily a bad thing. The Lord is our source and provider of our means, therefore it is our Christian responsibility to review our spending habits and judge the appropriateness of our purchases and investments. However, even in these tough economic times, we believe our ministry is a good investment.

The Mission of New Vision City of Refuge is simple: We strive to provide a home for needy children in a loving, Christ-centered, disciplined environment. We desire to witness the evidence of transformed lives through training, nurturing, and mentoring. Finally, we endeavor to raise up a generation of productive citizens for the community, the nation, and the church.

The return on this investment is immeasurable.

A total of $150 is needed each month to take care of one child. Your support enables New Vision City of Refuge to provide benefits such as education, health care, housing, childcare, books, food and clothing. We are on a quest for six sponsors per child that can give $25/month. Of course, a monthly commitment of any amount is appreciated and if you desire, you may give more.

Always Remember

I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all your works and consider what your hands have done. Psalm 143:5

Our mind is a wondrous and yet mysterious thing. The scent of a particular perfume or a glance at an aged photo can nudge even the most stubborn memories from exile. We all hold dear certain tangible reminders of a special event -a ticket stub from our first concert, a coin from a foreign country, or the petals of a corsage.

But why do we save such seemingly inconsequential items?

Because we don’t want to forget. Additionally, the apparently insignificant token we cherish enhances the memory, as seasonings enhance the flavors of a culinary dish.

For each of my children, I filled a small shoe-sized boxed with novelties from their childhood. In each, I saved the front page of the paper from the day of their birth, some baby clothes, a stuffed toy, a silver spoon, and various notes and cards.

Recently, we opened those boxes and wondered at items we haven’t seen in about four years. We laughed at the pictures, recalled almost-forgotten events, and marveled at the growth and maturity of our children. Every item was like a locket holding a secret picture; when opened it released its hidden memory and consequently, the next generation learned and cherished the stories of long ago.

I believe we learn to treasure memories from God himself. Throughout the Scripture, God continually calls his people to remember, his Holy Spirit aids our memory, and the Lord even gives instructions on how to remember. His people have built altars after glorious victories, enjoyed yearly feasts and festivals, and even now, eat and drink at his table, all in remembrance of him.

It's a Mystery

Sophia celebrated her 13th birthday with a murder-mystery party (disclaimer: no actual children were harmed during this event). The cast of characters included: General Dijon, Princess Fuchsia, Miss Crimson, Chef Ginger, Miss Ivory, Miss Pheasant, Miss Jade, and Dr. Grape. Clues, food, games, allegations, interrogations, and the big reveal rounded out the evening. Everyone had a blast and we are looking forward to a house filled with teenagers now.

The World Missions Summit 2

We had a wonderful experience at the World Missions Summit in Cincinnati this past week. A variety of speakers challenged over 3500 students to give a year to missions and pray about a lifetime. Many responded and prepared to go anywhere and do anything for God.

One especially challenging directive came from an unassuming servant of God shepherding the underground church in a sensitive country. He and his family’s determination to pastor their local congregation in spite of imprisonment and threats of violence humbled us all.

A missionary in one of the most volatile areas of our world today, implored us to try (don’t give up), to cry (proclaim the gospel), and to die (to self). He also reminded us that fear hinders missionary service and impedes the progress of the gospel.

At the Summit, we met many wonderful people like Nureka (pictured above). A native Jamaican, she blessed us with her joyful spirit and willing heart. Although, you may have missed the Summit, you have not missed your opportunity to serve. Please consider giving a year to missions and praying about a lifetime.

Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly yours, utterly dedicated unto you; and then use us, we pray you, as you will, and always to your glory and the welfare of your people; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Light the Christ Candle

Lesson: Light all previous candles plus the white candle. The white candle is the Christ candle. Today we recognize that Jesus Christ, the Light of the world, is born.

Scripture: Luke 2:15-20

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."
So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Prayer: Most Holy Lord, today you have given us the Christ Child, born of Mary, he is the hope of the earth and the joy of heaven. As we celebrate this day with carols and prayers, gifts and feasting, may we open our hearts to receive your Son. Come Incarnate Love, and rejuvenate us in body, mind, and spirit. Amen.

Light Four Advent Candles

Lesson: Light three purple and one pink candle. This is the Angel's candle or the candle of hope. As we light this candle we anticipate Christ's second advent and focus on his salvation.

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."

Prayer: Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and put on the armor of light, that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal. Amen.

Lesson: Light three purple candles or two purple candles and one pink candle, depending on your tradition. This is the Shepherd's candle; it reminds us that we, like the shepherds must come to Christ, believe in him, and tell the good news of Jesus' advent to others.

An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. Light an Advent Candle

Lesson: Today is the first Sunday in Advent. In this season of expectation, we anticipate the birth of the Christ child by lighting candles of symbolic significance. Today we light one purple candle, also known as the prophecy candle in our advent wreath. The candle is a reminder that God lovingly revealed Christ’s advent through the prophets hundreds of years before he was born. The color purple symbolizes penitence and royalty to remind us to prepare our hearts to receive our King.

Remember that hymn? (See previous post.) Just listening to the tune translates me back to my grade-school auditorium and its accompanying holiday program.

Initially, We Gather Together was a folk song written during the time the Dutch were engaged in a war of national liberation against Spain. Notice the first few words of the song—we gather together. Seemingly innocuous, these three words expressed potent dissent and protest; they resonated in the ears of King Phillip II of Spain who forbad the Dutch Protestants to gather for worship. Thankfully, the Dutch brought this song with them to the New World and this hymn of praise has become an American favorite especially during the Thanksgiving holiday.
I have heard that Thanksgiving is the most traveled weekend of the year. From near and far, we gather together with friends and family, around an abundant feast, offering thanks to God for his many blessings.

When I was growing up, we gathered with my father’s side of the family for the Thanksgiving holiday. With six children in his family, their respective spouses, and over a dozen grandchildren, the brood became too large for my grandparent’s home. Therefore, my grandfather made reservations at a local restaurant. We had our own private dining area and we still ate turkey and the normal fare. I enjoyed our different style of Thanksgiving and still have fond memories of sharing a table with my cousins at The Royal Footman Restaurant because it’s not about where you eat, it is about who you are with.

Thanksgiving is not a holiday in Jamaica, but all the missionaries gather at a central location to celebrate it regardless. We are still Americans after all! The turkey costs twice as much, fried onions are hard to come by, and the only pumpkin in Jamaica is green, but we make do because it’s not about what you eat, it’s about who you are giving thanks to.

And there are many things to be thankful for. We are thankful for the call of God on our lives. We are thankful for the children he has placed in our care. We are thankful for family, friends, and co- workers. We are thankful for God’s abundant provision. Lastly, we are thankful for our supporters and sponsors who help make what we do possible.

We are blessed.

Missionettes Jamaica Night

Stuart and I enjoyed Jamaica night with the First Assembly of God Missionettes in Fort Wayne, recently. The girls just finished their Latin America/Caribbean studies and invited us to join them to celebrate. The night began with dominoes—a national past time and then we feasted on Jamaican jerk-barbeque chicken, fruit salad, and bread pudding. Stuart and I fielded some insightful questions and the evening ended with a rousing game of limbo. Thanks Missionettes, for a night of Jamaican fun.

The Wittenberg Door

On the Eve of All Saints' Day, October 31, 1517, Doctor Martin Luther, professor of Scripture at the University of Wittenberg, Germany posted an invitation to debate on the door of the Wittenberg Cathedral. The invitation to debate contained ninety-five points, or theses, concerning the sale of indulgences.

Luther chose this date for posting his theses because the coming holy day would bring many of the community to services, ensuring that his statements would receive wide exposure.

In the preceding months Albert, Archbishop of Mainz had authorized Dominican Friar Johann Tetzel to sell indulgences (a paper declaring that the deceased person for whom it had been purchased had received total forgiveness of sins and therefore a release from Purgatory) in order to finance the construction of St. Peter's basilica. Tetzel is alleged to have declared "as soon as the coin in the coffer clings, the soul from Purgatory springs."

At the same time, Luther had been engaged in intensive study of the scriptures in search of his own spiritual peace. He found tremendous relief in the just shall live by faith. This principle of justification by faith became the positive argument underlying the ninety-five theses.

Because the theses were a direct challenge to the Papacy the reaction was swift and severe. The Pope initiated proceedings to have Luther tried for heresy; proceedings that very likely would have led to his execution. Luther, with the support of the Wittenberg faculty, appealed to elector Frederick III of Saxony for protection.

Although Luther did not intend to begin a separate Church, such was the unavoidable consequence of his challenge. By 1530 Germany was divided between communities loyal to the Pope and those following the reforms initiated by Luther.

[However] on Reformation Day 1999, the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification between the Lutheran World Federation and the Roman Catholic Church was publicly signed in Wittenberg. Together we declare: by faith alone is the centerpiece of this expression of ecumenical convergence.

The appointed lessons for the day point not only to the historical situation but also to the Church's constant need for ongoing renewal. Jeremiah 31:31-34 tells of the coming New Covenant where God will write His law on every human heart. Romans 3:19-28 declares the central tenet of the Reformation we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. John 8:31-36 enjoins us to be constant in the Word in order to be freed by the One who is Truth.

And since the law is not yet perfectly inscribed on every heart and all are not yet fully devoted to the Word, the task of Reformation is not yet complete.

Ecclesia semper Reformata--the Church is always reforming.

Peaceful Dwellings

The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever. -Isaiah 32:17

Quietness is a virtue I can appreciate -especially when surrounded by 25+ kids. However quietness is more than just the absence of sound, it is a state of being. Isaiah speaks of a time when a king will reign and his righteousness will ripple through his kingdom emanating calm assurance or peaceful trust upon all the people.

When praying for the children at New Vision City of Refuge I often pray for God to quiet their souls. Many of our children grapple with abandonment issues, loneliness, doubt, and learning disabilities. This at times leads to undesirable behavior even they do not always understand. In other words, their souls are restless and troubled.

But the Lord says, My people will live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest. -Isaiah 32:18

We strive at New Vision City of Refuge to give our children a sense of security, peace, and worth. We protect, provide, and prepare them through devoted caregivers, wholesome food, pleasant surroundings, and solid academic and spiritual training. However, quietness and confidence will only come when they allow the righteous King to reign in the kingdoms of their hearts.

Please pray for our faithful staff at New Vision City of Refuge to nurture these children effectively. Pray for our wonderful missionary team, the Bushhorns and the Yoders as they sacrificially fill in the gap during our absence. And of course, pray for our children to know the quietness and confidence of God’s eternal presence.

Just last week I requested a day for prayer and fasting for our missionary associates Paul and Dulcie Bushhorn (center). They have been waiting for weeks for their work permits to go through. Well, praise the Lord we just got word it finally arrived! This is a wonderful answer to prayer. The permit will be Fed-exed to them tomorrow, then they will go to Chicago to get their visas stamped in their passport.

Thanks so much for appealing to the Lord on their behalf. This is a great relief to everyone at New Vision City of Refuge Children’s Home.

Big Enough

Just last week, while going on my daily walk I looked up to the sky and pleaded with the Lord, "God, you need to remind me just how big you really are." We had been going through a stressful time and our problems were bigger than we could handle. But God is bigger still.

I was reminded of Job, how he consistently called on the Lord, pleading for mercy and understanding. Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm.

"Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?"

In essence, the Lord was reminding Job that if he is big enough to create the universe and all that is in it, he is big enough to trust even when Job didn't understand.

Today we are fasting and praying for Paul and Dulcie Bushhorn and their family. The Bushhorns are the Missionary Associates at New Vision City of Refuge in Christiana, Jamaica. Unfortunately, they have been stranded in Ohio waiting for their work permits to go through. They are anxious to return to Jamaica to resume their responsibilities as interim directors while we are itinerating.

This hold-up affects everyone, especially the kids and staff at the City of Refuge in Christiana. It has been a tumultuous summer; full of changes and challenges. However, the Lord is bigger than all of this and we will trust him no matter what.

To Seek and Save

Have you seen the movie August Rush? It’s the story of a child prodigy who is inadvertently abandoned by his parents at birth. However, years of growing up in the system doesn’t dim August’s dream of finding his parents. Eventually, he runs away to seek what he has lost. In the course of his journey, he meets Wizard who recognizes August’s special gift and seeks to capitalize on it.

Wizard asks him, “What do you want to be in the world? I mean the whole world. What do you want to be? Close your eyes and think about it.” In a blink August replies, “Found.”

It’s a scary thing to be lost. Jesus taught at least three parables concerning the importance and necessity of searching for what is lost, because what is lost is highly valuable. Friend, there are at least 12,000 lost children in Jamaica; they are homeless, abandoned, and often abused and they need to be found.

A Challenging Proposition

Visitors to the City of Refuge in Christiana desire a life changing experience; spiritually, mentally, and physically. In essence, they want a challenge. On our fun day many brave the 930' zip line over YS Falls (like Sophia, pictured here) and testify of the exhilarating experience.

Itineration is definitely a challenge as well (spiritually, mentally, and physically). However, it can also be an exhilarating experience especially when faithful people brave the challenge with you.

For example, a businessman in our church feels so strongly about our ministry to the orphans in Jamaica, he has offered to match any new monthly commitment towards our missionary support dollar for dollar. The Heavens Declare the Glory of God

"The skies proclaim the work of his hand." Psalm 19:1

I recall looking up into a brilliant Jamaican sky one evening after a storm blew through. In the absence of unnatural light, God’s splendid galaxy overwhelmed us. Constellations usually hidden by light pollution, now shimmered with clarity. We were in awe. Indeed the heavens do declare the glory of God.

I felt the same way recently after I read Creation and Evolution by Alan Hayward. In his book, Dr Hayward, a Christian physicist, affirms God’s handiwork while at the same time disputing evolution. Interesting enough he accomplishes this in part by presenting evidence from non-Christian researchers.

The record of nature and the revelation of God’s word concur; all of creation has been magnificently fashioned by a divine engineer. That is why our creedal statements confess, “I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth,” and our hymnals melodically declare, “This is my Father’s world.” Our world is a wonder to behold, and our God is the Creator to be adored.

Even There

In Psalm 139, David poignantly expresses his wonder at the all-knowing, ever-present God: Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

The psalmist exemplifies the truth that we can never move beyond God’s scrutiny, provision, or care. In other words, we are never beyond God’s reach.

It was difficult for the staff, the children, and our family when we left the Christiana City of Refuge for our year of itineration. However, this separation has a purpose; and I am not just talking about raising funds. This is a learning experience for all of us that God is our source; because it’s not about our presence, it’s about his.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me; your right hand will hold me fast.

Although we may find ourselves on distant corners of the earth, God takes notice of our every need, every step, every prayer and he is there to lead and lend a hand. Pray for the Christiana City of Refuge and us this year, that we may discern God’s sovereign presence and provision as we seek to do his will.

Happy Father's Day

Although, Stuart and I have many responsibilities at New Vision City of Refuge, we feel that, our primary focus is to model what a healthy, Christian family looks like. Admittedly, we are far from perfect, but Stuart and I are committed to one another and to our children. We didn’t realize the extent of our influence though until just recently.

Brianna* is a quiet, teen-aged girl, with a pretty smile. By her own admission though, she has no close friends and she doesn’t trust anyone, especially adults. It isn’t difficult to figure out why; Brianna bears the scars and physical disabilities that evidence previous abuse.

Over the years, Stuart has been a reliable, trustworthy, father figure to all the kids at New Vision. Being an affectionate person, he gives fatherly hugs and expresses his love openly. At first Brianna, although not resistant to affection, did not readily respond to it. Rather she seemed simply to endure it. Undaunted, Stuart continued to tell Brianna how much she is loved and that he was praying for her.

The day our family left Jamaica, it was a tearful parting as final goodbyes and prayers were expressed. Then a miracle happened: Stuart hugged Brianna and Brianna hugged back.

And Brianna wouldn’t let go.

We are not letting go either. For a season, we must be parted from our family at New Vision City of Refuge in order to raise funds and gather more sponsors. However, you can facilitate our reunion through your continued prayers and financial support. Thanks for being a part of the City of Refuge family.

As parents, we know change with its accompanying growing pains is inevitable, but ultimately rewarding. Our family prepares for yet another change as we return to the States in June for a time of missionary renewal and itineration. Anticipating this transitional year, we have welcomed two couples qualified and called of God to fill in the gap at New Vision City of Refuge.

Paul and Dulcie Bushhorn will act as interim directors at New Vision City of Refuge. The Bushhorn family ministered at another children’s home in Jamaica a couple of years ago and are eagerly anticipating their return to Jamaica. Their love for children, years of ministry experience, and humble hearts will be a welcome asset to New Vision City of Refuge.

Jordan and Becky Yoder will also lend their expertise at New Vision City of Refuge. Graduates of University of Missouri, Jordan earned a degree in Plant Science and Becky is a registered nurse. Jordan will oversee our sprawling farm and care for our growing animal family. Becky will assist our medical teams and oversee the children’s health needs.

Life is full of changes and transitions, but the Lord remains faithful and his foundations firm. We are confident the children and staff at New Vision City of Refuge are in very capable hands.

New Vision City of Refuge is raising more then kids these days, we got chicks as well! Last fall, a team from King of Kings Lutheran Church built our chicken coop and just recently we were able to put on the finishing touches. Another blessing is our new missionary associates, Jordan and Becky Yoder. Jordan grew up on a farm and has a degree in Plant Science, so our 159 chicks will be well cared for.

We AIM to Please

Pastor Jimmy Johnston brought a great bunch of kids from Kentucky recently on an Ambassadors in Missions (AIM) team. Worship, sports clinics, games, and devotions were the order of the day. Our kids found the joy of the Lord in everything that they did. Local high schools also benefited from their ministry during morning devotions and wanted them to return.

The team painted the wall at the top of the property and inside the girls dorm as well. A registered nurse on the team stocked our shelves with medicines and advised our staff concerning normal childhood illnesses and boo-boos.

Thank you, Joe Girdler (KY district superintendent), Brian Neugent (KY district youth director), Pastor Jimmy, and everyone for a great week in Jamaica.

Speed the Light of the Gospel

Everywhere, is the Speed the Light theme for 2007-2008. Speed the Light (STL) is the Assemblies of God, student-initiated program that raises funds to provide equipment and vehicles to missionaries so that we can speed the light of the gospel to a world in darkness.

As missionaries, we have gone everywhere in Jamaica with our STL vehicle. Although we live on an island that is about the size of Connecticut, Jamaica’s terrain proves challenging; a 50-mile trek through the mountains can take over 2 hours to travel. We use our STL vehicle to take the New Vision children to school, the hospital, doctor’s appointments, field trips, and other special outings. We are grateful to the Indiana District youth who personally sacrificed and helped raise funds for this necessary means of transportation.

Thankfully, New Vision City of Refuge has been approved to receive a STL, 15-passenger seat van. Anyone who has visited us knows how desperately New Vision City of Refuge needs this vehicle. Unfortunately the needed funds are not yet available (New Vision has been waiting 2 years).

A wonderful team from Victory Christian Center, Terre Haute, Indiana visited New Vision City of Refuge this past week. Pastor Dana Coverstone and his youth pastor Shawn Riggs are shown here refereeing Bible Quiz. The Buzz Box was a gift from the church and a big hit with the kids.

This versatile team hosted an excellent Children and Youth Worker Training seminar at our local assembly. They imparted vision and taught about prayer, object lessons, puppets, and Bible Quiz. Keilah (Dana and Jennifer Coverstone's 10 year old daughter) took on the Assemblies of God Bible College in a Bible Quiz showdown. Everyone was impressed with Keilah's expertise. Each church in attendance happily received a Bible Quiz Fact Pack and an instruction booklet, complements of Victory Christian Assembly.

Two licensed child therapists on the team encouraged and enlightened our staff about the special needs of our kids. Pastor Dana also presented a very generous check to finish the first floor of the new boys dorm. Thanks, Victory Christian for a great week!

The Road to Emmaus

The Gospel of Luke tells the story of two disheartened friends traveling on the road to Emmaus. A stranger greets them on the way and compassionately inquires about their troubles. The disciples speak to him about Jesus and his untimely death. “But we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel,” they inform the traveler, dejectedly.

But we had hoped. It is what we all say on the road to Emmaus when life interrupts our plans. In our walk with the Lord, we have certain expectations, and when they are not met, we become disillusioned.

The Jews expected a triumphant Messiah, one who would usher in the Kingdom, and free them from foreign rule. What they got was a crucified would-be Christ (so they thought), and Rome was still in power. But we had hoped.

A word of advice for Emmaus-bound travelers, do not walk alone. Remember, there were two disciples traveling on the road that day. “Carry each other’s burdens and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ,” the apostle declares. Do not travel alone, disciples and do not let others walk alone either. Troubled travelers may not feel God–but they will feel your presence as you walk with them on the road to Emmaus.

A word of encouragement, sojourners to Emmaus, you do not walk alone. Jesus joins you in your travels. Although the Lord’s felt presence might elude you, he is closer than you think. Our despairing disciples did not expect Jesus to die, but neither did they expect to meet him on the road to Emmaus.

Lastly, enlightenment awaits you at journey’s end. Reaching Emmaus, the disciples encourage the stranger to remain, and he accepts their invitation. The visitor joins them at their table, and gives thanks for the bread. After he breaks it, he presents it to them and “then their eyes were opened, and they recognized [the risen Christ].” On the road to Emmaus, we often do not understand why we had to travel that way. However, God makes himself known to us in a way we would never have known before had we not traveled on the road to Emmaus.

After recognizing Jesus, the disciples hurried back to Jerusalem to testify, "It is true! The Lord has risen."

He is risen, indeed.

Happy Palm Sunday

Today is Palm Sunday and I am reminiscing about my great grandmother. Christened Almirinda Proscino, my great grandmother was born in the United States but returned to Italy as a young girl with her parents. Later in life, she married my great grandfather, Ciro Fiondella, boarded a ship to cross the Atlantic, and returned to her birthplace. (I never thought about it before, but my nonni (nawn-nee) was a TCK –a Third Culture Kid. That is, a child who grows up in a country that is not their passport country, like a Missionary Kid.) In Hamden, Connecticut, the Fiondella family raised their five children, one of which was my grandfather, George (my mother Carol’s father).

I remember Nonni today on Palm Sunday because we celebrated the holiday at her home each year. Palm Sunday in Connecticut is celebrated like nowhere else that I have lived (Florida, Indiana, Jamaica). I don’t know if it’s an Italian thing, a Catholic thing, or a New England thing, but Palm Sunday in Hamden was special.

Our large extended family arrived at Nonni’s abode after church on Palm Sunday. It’s difficult to describe how many people descended upon her humble home, think ala My Big Fat Greek Wedding and you’ll get the picture. Nonni had a huge garden in her backyard (huge from my childhood perspective anyway) where she grew eggplant, squash, tomatoes, etc. A trellis of grapes framed her back entrance, and wine fermented in the cellar (Communal wine, I’m sure).

The din of chatter, and laughter, greeted you at the door, and with the melody of All Glory, Laud, and Honor still ringing in your ears, strips of palms were fashioned into crosses and exchanged with loved ones. The smell of delectable treats tempted your taste buds. On Palm Sunday you had your choice of tea, coffee, soda, and assorted homemade delights: anginetti, angel wings, pignolli, ricotta pie, cannoli (oh, how I miss the food from my hometown). But it was the love that oozed out of every crevice of my great grandmother's being and home that I remember most. It was in every hug, in every kiss, in every tin of cookies, and in every dollar bill secretly crunched into your hand.

In many churches, Palm Sunday is a second-rate holiday, a precursor to Easter and not much more. But to me Palm Sunday is special. So wave your palms, give thanks to the Christ who rode triumphantly into the city, and bless your family on this special day.

“What are you giving up?” I heard that phrase every year while growing up in New England, in anticipation of Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent. Lent is the observance of the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness fasting, in preparation for his earthly ministry. Christians choose to give up or fast something during this time to identify with Jesus’ humility and suffering. I may not have understood all the nuances of Lent as a child but the practice has stayed with me all these years.

Although a Christian can fast at any time, Lent is an occasion when we as the Body of Christ fast together to prepare for the holiest day on the Christian calendar. Fasting is the act of refraining from a particular food or activity to feast on the Lord. There are many forms fasting can take; the Daniel fast (no meat), the chocolate fast (no sweets), or the TV fast (no trash). Most fasts are deliberate and intentional but some are not.

In Jamaica, some American foods are not available, like brown sugar. Jamaica has raw sugar (which they call brown sugar) but they do not have the kind you need to make chocolate chip cookies(!). We had been in Jamaica for over a year before I was able to make apple crisp (a family favorite). I had forgotten how good the simple dessert was and was amazed at the taste sensation when I finally had that first bite. Fasting helped me to appreciate the gift of brown sugar.

Lest you think giving up something for Lent is like making a New Year’s resolution; it is not. Most resolutions take the form of giving up something for good for the purpose of self-improvement but fasting is giving up something for a time for soul-improvement. Through this period of self-denial, we learn to identify with the Lord and appreciate his provision.

During this season of Lent, I pose a challenge: while you are giving up for God, pray the children at New Vision City of Refuge would give in to him. Pray for others to understand what true religion is and become sponsors. Lastly, pray for the local church in Jamaica to continue to give to their orphans through the ministry of the City of Refuge.

We said goodbye this week to Sophia's hamster, Sam. He lived a long full life (for a rodent). Gifted to Sophia on her 10th birthday, Sam was showing his age in recent months -losing his hair (I didn't know hamsters could do that), and generally slowing down. Some would say that Sam was more than a hamster, that he was a . . . uh . . . well . . . he was a Jamaican hamster. But he was fine Jamaican hamster and he will be missed. Goodbye, Sam.

Olivia celebrated her 16th birthday on January 26. We gathered at the famous Rick's Cafe in Negril along with the rest of the missionary family in Jamaica for this special occasion. No, she is not a high school science experiment gone awry but rather a real woman named Marla Cilley whose website http://www.flylady.net/ is dedicated to helping people fly from CHAOS (Can’t Have Anyone Over Syndrome). Her “toolbox” is full of sage advice, words of encouragement, and heartening testimonies to get novice flutterers organized and flying in the right direction.

New Vision City of Refuge has a similar toolbox full of items to help our children learn to fly from the chaos in their lives. Members of numerous missions and medical teams thoughout the year have delved into our toolbox to join us in the process.

Sponsorship is one such tool. As sponsors you have helped our children fly by praying for them to be free of the emotional baggage many carry because of abuse and abandonment. Another tool for flying is your encouraging letters; it raises the children’s spirits to know someone is thinking of them. Lastly, your continued financial support provides food, clothing, school materials, and all the basic necessities of life which helps New Vision City of Refuge fly and meet our monthly budget.

They started off their day opening up stockings and having a nice breakfast accompanied by hot chocolate. Then a little later they enjoyed Christmas cake and sorrel before opening up more gifts. The Great Debate

New Vision City of Refuge was honored to host a debate sponsored by the Child Develpment Agency (CDA) of Jamaica. These last few months four of our residents as well as children from Windsor Lodge and Hanbury Children's Homes (Salvation Army Ministries) diligently prepared and delivered their speeches at our respective homes on a rotating basis. This was a tremendous learning opportiunity for all those involved. Each participant received a certificate and first and second place trophies were awarded to the victors. Windsor Lodge was honored this year for their outstanding team. We look forwarded to more friendly competition and fellowship with our neighboring children's homes.

One of our own was recently honored at the National Women's Ministries Appreciation Banquet in Montego Bay. Doreen Christian is our head staff person. Cooped-up Cornhuskers

A wonderful team from King of Kings Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska visited with us this past week. Team leader Kevin Holdorf had a vision to build a chicken coop on our property and has been woking diligently these last couple of years to pursue this project. This generous team also had opportunity to do devotions and crafts with all the children, treat the staff to a spa day and visit our church and Bible College.

Spring Up O Well

The ancient city of Hierapolis was well known for its medicinal hot springs. This popular attraction promised healing relief for those who sought to soothe their aches and pains.

Another ancient city, Colosse did not have a hot springs but it did have a cold springs. People also trekked there to receive the invigorating and refreshing benefits of their water source.

Laodicea on the other hand did not have an adequate water supply which necessitated the construction of aqueducts to provide water for their city. As opposed to Hierapolis or Colosse the water at Laodicea was neither hot nor cold. People did not flock to Laodicea to receive the healing benefits of their hot water nor the refreshing benefits of their cold water because their water was lukewarm and good for nothing.

Jesus says, “I know your deeds, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish you were either one or the other!” (Revelation 3:15).

The sin of Laodicea was that they were irrelevant; they were of no spiritual or practical significance to anyone. Unlike their water-logged neighbors with their medicinal spas, Laodicea was neither hot nor cold. They did not provide healing for the spiritually infirmed or refreshment for the spiritually fatigued. They were lukewarm and useless.

We are fortunate at New Vision City of Refuge to have the opportunity to provide healing and refreshment to those who are physically, emotionally and spiritually in need. Because of your consistent prayers and financial support we can be both hot and cold to those seeking healing relief or refreshing respite. Together let us continue to be a source for the well-spring of life to all who are seeking assistance.

The Sun Shines on New Vision

Recently two churches from the Sunshine State came and ministered at New Vision City of Refuge. Page Pond and Bagdad Assembly of God along with their respective pastors, Bo Senterfitt and Rickey Tedder brought a wonderful group of people to Jamaica. They worked hard on the new boys dorm by laying tile, installing and varnishing doors and painting. The ladies also cleaned windows, sorted out the clothes in the storeroom and did crafts with the children. Each night we enjoyed singing and devotions together in the cool night air. Thanks so much Page Pond and Bagdad Assembly for shining down on New Vision City of Refuge Children's Home.

He is Our Peace

Anyone who has heard the old saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” knows how silly and untrue this aphorism is. We have personally seen how deep and real the pain is when our children at New Vision City of Refuge have been called “dashway pickneys” (a patois term meaning “throw away children”) by callous school mates.

Derogatory terms have the intention to separate: to make others feel less than worthy. Teasing and mocking is nothing new. Although, we may inwardly cheer when David calls Goliath an “uncircumcised Philistine,” we are at a loss in our contemporary setting to understand the contempt and disdain behind these words.

Jews in the Old Testament were chosen and marked by God to be the covenant people. This was evidenced by the sign of the covenant which of course was circumcision. All others not a part of the community of faith were referred to as “Gentiles” or “uncircumcised.” This term, “Gentiles” although a seemingly benign expression in our 21st century ears was actually a reprehensible and disparaging name meant to degrade and demean anyone who was not a part of the covenant people.

In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul enlightens us to a mystery previously hidden but now openly proclaimed; that Jew and Gentile are to be reconciled as one. The Apostle was not simply stating that Jew and Gentile should tolerate each other or do their best to get along. He was fervently preaching that Jew and Gentile are now one new man; united, joined together, complete in Christ. The Gentiles, formerly “separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship…foreigners to the covenant…without hope and without God…who once were far away have now been brought near through the blood of Christ”(Ephesians 2:12-13).

No longer “dashway pickneys” but members of God’s family, united with the covenant people.

At New Vision City of Refuge our children who once were abandoned, neglected and abused have now have been “brought near” and welcomed into a loving family environment where they share in its privileges and responsibilities. With your help, our hope and intention is that they realize their Heavenly Father guarantees the equivalent in his family as well.

He is our peace.

Deep calls to Deep

Jamaica has many beautiful places to visit including some breathtaking waterfalls. We have braved a few and although Dunn’s River Falls is more well-known and popular our family prefers the serene locale of YS Falls.

While in the States my family and I had the opportunity to spend a few days at Niagara Falls visiting my parents. We journeyed on the “Maid of the Mist” and felt the spray of the most powerful falls in North America as its rushing waters came crashing down within a few short feet of us. The sound was deafening but the experience was enlightening.

“Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls,” pens the Psalmist. He creates for us a dramatic image of the outpouring of water which flows from God’s repository above to the earth below. As one who stands in the midst of this turbulence he continues by saying, “All your waves and breakers have swept over me.”

It is quite evident that the author’s life is flooded with despair and suffering yet in the center of this torrent there is a confession of hope, “By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me-a prayer to the God of my life.”

Experiencing the roar of the waterfall is not unique to this ancient writer; the cares of this life have swept violently over each of us. Even the children at New Vision City of Refuge have heard the deafening roar of the waterfall and have felt its turbulence. Through our ministry though, we are teaching them to hear God’s song through the uncertainties of life.

Your prayers, words of encouragement and financial assistance add to the melody of God’s song which reminds us of his presence and faithfulness even in the midst of turbulent times. Thank you for your continued support.

Heading Home NOT

Well I thought we were going home tomorrow but it doesn't look like that will be possible. My flight was cancelled and after talking with Stuart it might just be as well. He tried going to Christiana and telephone poles were down all over the place. Our friends in Kingston said the airport road was impassable.

Tomorrow I will call the travel agent and try to find another flight out at the end of the week.

I am so grateful to everyone who has prayed and offered to help us in our plight. I want to especially thank Shawn and Cheryl Small of Wonder Voyage who have generously put us up in a hotel while we wait to go home. God is good!

Heading Home

As Hurricane Dean heads towards Mexico we are heading home. Tomorrow morning our flight is still scheduled to fly. We will go to Miami and then into Kingston. Please pray for roads to be clear so Stuart won't have a problem picking us up.
Our City of Refuge in Christiana held up to some very strong winds; some of our trees were damaged and some roofing was blown off. The City of Refuge in Kingston suffered much worse damage; the chicken coop with 150 chickens is gone, the coffee crop is ruined and a few roofs were blown off.
Fortunately no one was hurt at either home.
After today I probably won't have internet service for a while. So until then, thanks for your prayers and I'll send an update as soon as I can.

The Approaching Storm

Hurrican Dean is poised to hit Jamaica on Sunday, August 19. Our family has been in the States for the last couple of weeks spending our last week in Texas for our Caribbean Retreat. That is where Wendy and the kids are right now. Stuart flew out this morning ahead of the storm to go back to New Vision City of Refuge Children's Home and help them prepare. At this point the government is only allowing citizens and those with work permits to enter Jamaica.

Down and Dirty

Trinity Episcopal Church from Belleville, Michigan recently sent a hardworking, fun-loving team to work and minister at New Vision City of Refuge Children's Home. Led by Shawn Small and Eric Neubauer of Wonder Voyage Missions, this group had the envious job of hauling rock and digging dirt to help build our septic system! They also took all our kids on a picnic to Gouri Cave and went spelunking with the teens. A visit to the town of Christiana and game night filled out our week together.

The Pittsburgh Healers

Recently a team from Calvary Assembly in Irwin, Pennsylvania (right outside of Pittsburgh) visited us at New Vision City of Refuge Children's Home. Pastor Todd and Sharon Neveu (classmates with us at Southeastern University of the Assemblies of God) led this wonderful group in work and ministry. They scraped, painted, cleaned, organized, did crafts and hosted a staff appreciation party. The staff was delighted with the hand crafted angel pins that the children made, the personalized gift bags, and all the generous items they received. The children especially enjoyed the bonfire and s'mores. Thank you Pastor Todd, Sharon, Nicoletta, Keziah, Courtney, Heather, Wendy and Phillip for your generous spirit and your kindness towards everyone at New Vision City of Refuge Children's Home.

Extended Family

The family at New Vision City of Refuge Children's Home is about to increase with the expected arrival of newly appointed Missionary Associates, Paul and Dulcie Bushhorn and their four children. The Bushhorns have valuable missions experience including serving as missionary interns in the summer of 2006, at another children’s home in Jamaica which helped solidify their call to the orphans of this island.

These Missionary Associates will be a great asset to New Vision City of Refuge not only to help facilitate the work load but to also ease our time of transition when we return to the States in June 2008, to begin our year of itineration. The sooner they arrive here, to learn the ministry and build a relationship with the children and staff, the better. The Bushhorns hope to join us as early as January 2008, but they need your help to expedite this process.

Let Freedom Ring

In The United States of America and Jamaica, summer is the season to celebrate our respective national independence days. The United States celebrated her independence on July 4, and Jamaica will commemorate hers on August 6.

In each of our histories there are notable persons who epitomize the fight for freedom and independence. Depending on the country you live in, we recall and honor the self-sacrificing actions or inspiring words of people like Patrick Henry or Alexander Bustamante, George Washington or Norman Washington Manley, Paul Revere or Paul Boggle.

Freedom though, is not simply a physical concern but a spiritual one. A person can not truly be liberated if his mind and soul are in captivity. The Psalmist declares, “I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts.” Although it may sound paradoxical, the way to true freedom is through obedience to God.

Many of our children gained physical freedom from abusive guardians or abject poverty when they were brought to New Vision City of Refuge Children’s Home. Although, we are thankful for the opportunity to love and care for them, there is a greater freedom we desire for them to experience; the freedom to know and love the Liberator of their souls.

But our common foe is an unmerciful opponent; and the battle rages on.

As a friend and sponsor of New Vision City of Refuge you have become our allies. Your prayers and financial assistance provide the necessary arms to fortify us in this sacred war. As patriots we stand under and salute our national flag to honor those who fought for our freedoms. As Christians, we stand together under the cross of Christ and continue to fight for the liberation of each child’s soul.

Milestones

Two of our residents graduated from Christiana High School this past week. Saoul (pictured here with Stuart) and Andre walked the line on July 5, 2007. Saoul has a desire to be a teacher and Andre would like to become an electrician. They were also looking good as they attended their Graduation Banquet and Ball over the weekend.

Christiana is located in the central part of Jamaica in the parish of Manchester. Our small agricultural town is high up in the hills (New Vision City of Refuge is at 3000' above sea level) and the main local crop is Irish potatoes (really!).

Victory in Jesus

Recently, we had a wonderful team from Victory Christian Center in Terre Haute, Indiana visit us at New Vision City of Refuge Children's Home. Led by Pastor Dana and Jennifer Coverstone, this team ministered to our family, the 24 resident children and our staff throughout their stay. Working hard every day they installed doors and windows in our new boys’ dorm, motion detector lights outside our apartment and organized our clothing storage closet, as well as many other practical tasks.

Each day the team creatively ministered to the children through devotions and introduced them to Bible Quiz. Our staff was touched by their heartfelt ministry and prayers. The schools in the area were blessed by their ministry as devotions were delivered at two high schools and one elementary school. In fact the elementary school implored them to return the following week. The team graciously switched their fun day for the opportunity to volunteer at our health clinic and about 65 patients were cared for that day.
On a personal note, the team was extremely generous and gracious towards our family. My children were blessed by their thoughtful gifts but even more so by the loving attention and friendship they offered. Thank you Pastor Dana and Victory Christian Center. We look forward to your return next year!

Gifts to Remember

Most churches on Father's Day honor dads by giving them small tokens of appreciation on their special day. This same tradition is recognized here in Jamaica as well. Pictured to the right is what our church gave Stuart on Father's Day. Properly wrapped in cellophane, Stuart received aftershave cream, a can of Irish Moss (I read the ingredients but I still have no idea what it is), a bottle of Malta (it may look like beer but I assure you it is a non-alcoholic barley drink), and a can of Supligen (a vitamin fortified milk beverage). Coincidentally, Olivia, Wesley and Sophia bought Stuart one of those plastic, liquid filled mugs that you put in the freezer.

Praise God, Stuart will smell good and be sufficiently hydrated.

Following the light of the sun, we left the Old World. -Christopher Columbus

In May of 1494, Christopher Columbus sailed west and came upon the region we now know as the West Indies. Recently our own young explorers visited Columbus Park in St Ann’s parish where this famous voyager landed. Lorraine Beaton, our school teacher and pastor’s wife, led our band of discoverers to their hideaway at Chatham’s Cottage in Montego Bay and then on to a variety of places including the airport, the beach, and of course KFC.

The children enjoyed themselves immensely and appreciated the fun and spiritual guidance they received on a retreat designed just for them (no big kids allowed!). This could not have been possible without the gifts and financial support we receive from you on a monthly basis. Many local pastors and businesses also gave generously and for that we are rejoicing.

We have a busy summer scheduled with the teens attending the Assemblies of God Youth Camp next month while other children will be enrolling in summer school. The cost is approximately $50 per child. Would you please consider an extra offering this month to send a child to camp or to summer school? Use the City of Refuge account number, 6825046(42) and simply designate your offering.

The voyage of Christopher Columbus was a costly one. He needed others not only to believe in his dream but to invest in his journey. Recently we visited Rockland's Bird Sanctuary near Montego Bay. We successfully found this private abode after maneuvering past Sasquatch-size potholes and four-wheeling up a steep mountain road. The trip was well worth it though, as we were greeted by care-taker Fritz who supplied us each with a mini hummingbird feeder to hold and sprinkled bird seed on our knees and by our feet. It didn't take long for our flying friends to warm up to us and start feeding. We enjoyed the company of Jamaica's national bird, the Doctor Bird; a hummingbird with a long double tail that resembles a doctor's coat. Also, a Mango Hummingbird, a large Jamaica Oriole and a variety of others. We were then given a tour of the surrounding area and an education about the various plants and herbs.

I am just finishing up my first year of teaching at the Assemblies of God Bible College in Christiana, Jamaica. My class of first year students is the largest class the Bible College has seen. They have been exceptional, vibrant and exciting students to teach. Thanks to the encouragement of the General Superintendent of Jamaica, Reverend Conrad Pitkin, education is getting the positive push it needs. Students from all over the island, including graduates of Teen Challenge and members of other denominations, are coming and receiving not only a great education but also ministerial experience in the Pentecostal tradition. In December, fellow missionaries Reverend Steve and Pam Livingston and Academic Dean Reverend Margaret Mills are hosting a missions team to Curacao and taking as many students that are able to go with them. Plans are also in the works to expand the Bible College to allow more students the opportunity to recieve a quality education. This is an exciting time for the Assemblies of God Bible College in Jamaica.

Of Chickens and Pigs

Someone once said that the difference between involvement and commitment is like an eggs and ham breakfast; the chicken is involved but the pig was committed.

The month of May turns our attention towards a different type of commitment celebrated every year in honor of mothers. Each child, in every family, is encouraged to show in their own creative way their appreciation for mom. Pictures are drawn, cards are created and breakfast is presented in bed for mom on her special day.
Although the act of giving birth technically makes someone a mother that is not what is actually being celebrated on Mother’s Day. The celebration is in honor of the wonderful privilege and awesome responsibility each mom accepts in her commitment to raising a child created in the image of God.
This same privilege and responsibility has also been entrusted to us at New Vision City of Refuge Children’s Home. Although other women may have given birth to our children, we are committed to raising them in a way that honors God. Motherhood is a noble endeavor and we give thanks to our friends and sponsors who by their prayers and financial support help us to honor our commitment.

He Knows My Name

A Sunday school teacher relates how a class of youngsters she once taught had some problems repeating the Lord's Prayer. What they lacked in memory skills they made up for in imagination. One child sincerely prayed, "Our Father, who art in heaven, how'd you know my name?"
A few years ago, Tommy Walker, a well known worship leader penned the words to a simple but profound song:

I have a Father, he calls me his own. He’ll never leave me, no matter where I go. He knows my name, he knows my every thought. He sees each tear that falls and hears me when I call.

If you were as fortunate as I to have an earthly father who exemplified the qualities of our heavenly father, then you know the above verse is true. But if you were not so fortunate, as so many of our children here at New Vision City of Refuge, you can rest in the truth that God is everything you have always hoped for in a dad.
When a child doesn’t have a family to call his own; then God calls on his family to fill in the gap. That is the heart and soul of our ministry at New Vision City of Refuge. This is the ministry you are a part of as well as you invest in the lives of these children through your prayers and financial support. Thank you so much for all you do.

This is our new dining hall and kitchen. Also included in the same building are accomodations for the boys and their house parents. Although a lot of progress has been made this year we still have a long way to go. We would love to be able to complete this first phase by the end of this summer.

It is estimated that it will cost $20,000 to finish the first floor. If 20 churches/individuals are willing to give $1000 each or 40 churches/individuals are willing to give $500 each we would be able to accomplish this task. Please pray and consider what you or your church is willing to give, keeping in mind, "Food is an important part of a balanced diet." (Fran Lebowitz)

The Kingdom of God is Near

When you enter a town and you are welcomed, eat what is set before you. Heal the sick who are there and tell them, "The Kingdom of God is near." Luke 10:8, 9

New Vision City of Refuge hosted a medical team this week to minister to the people of the surrounding community as well as to our children and staff.

Dr Charlie Sykes with the help of his wife Dottie, daughter Meredith, volunteer pharmacist Rebecca and our friend and fellow missionary, Nurse Peggy Pyatt (pictured) treated and dispensed medications to over 60 people per day.

Our daughter Olivia also helped out in the clinic, filling out forms and finding files for the patients. Each morning began with a worship song, prayer and a short devotion. Every patient remaining until lunch also received a Juicy Patti (Jamaican fast food). Young children were given a small toy to play with while they waited, prayer requests were taken, spiritual counsel was offered and free spiritiual literature was also handed out.

Brown & Bubbly

The second annual Brown & Bubbly Awards were held recently at New Vision City of Refuge. High school students were awarded prizes according to how well they did in their respective subjects and grades. Samantha, grade 8, was awarded best overall average for all the grades represented. Bryan, grade 10, received honors for best grade in Math. Almost every high school student received some kind of recognition and all received encouragement to acheive their best in school.
Jamaica is a highly competive country when it comes to education. High school students must pass extensive tests in order to be even considered for college. Please pray for each of our students that they will take their education seriously and try their hardest to acheive the best grades possible.
