We AIM to Please

Pastor Jimmy Johnston brought a great bunch of kids from Kentucky recently on an Ambassadors in Missions (AIM) team. Worship, sports clinics, games, and devotions were the order of the day. Our kids found the joy of the Lord in everything that they did. Local high schools also benefited from their ministry during morning devotions and wanted them to return.

The team painted the wall at the top of the property and inside the girls dorm as well. A registered nurse on the team stocked our shelves with medicines and advised our staff concerning normal childhood illnesses and boo-boos.

Thank you, Joe Girdler (KY district superintendent), Brian Neugent (KY district youth director), Pastor Jimmy, and everyone for a great week in Jamaica.

Check out the web album and videos of the team in the right-hand column.

We have the Victory

A wonderful team from Victory Christian Center, Terre Haute, Indiana visited New Vision City of Refuge this past week. Pastor Dana Coverstone and his youth pastor Shawn Riggs are shown here refereeing Bible Quiz. The Buzz Box was a gift from the church and a big hit with the kids.

This versatile team hosted an excellent Children and Youth Worker Training seminar at our local assembly. They imparted vision and taught about prayer, object lessons, puppets, and Bible Quiz. Keilah (Dana and Jennifer Coverstone's 10 year old daughter) took on the Assemblies of God Bible College in a Bible Quiz showdown. Everyone was impressed with Keilah's expertise. Each church in attendance happily received a Bible Quiz Fact Pack and an instruction booklet, complements of Victory Christian Assembly.

Two licensed child therapists on the team encouraged and enlightened our staff about the special needs of our kids. Pastor Dana also presented a very generous check to finish the first floor of the new boys dorm. Thanks, Victory Christian for a great week!

Pictures and video of the team are available under the Photo Album heading in the right-hand column.

Cooped-up Cornhuskers

A wonderful team from King of Kings Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska visited with us this past week. Team leader Kevin Holdorf had a vision to build a chicken coop on our property and has been woking diligently these last couple of years to pursue this project. This generous team also had opportunity to do devotions and crafts with all the children, treat the staff to a spa day and visit our church and Bible College.
Thanks so much King of Kings Lutheran Church. We look forward to your next visit.

The Sun Shines on New Vision

Recently two churches from the Sunshine State came and ministered at New Vision City of Refuge. Page Pond and Bagdad Assembly of God along with their respective pastors, Bo Senterfitt and Rickey Tedder brought a wonderful group of people to Jamaica. They worked hard on the new boys dorm by laying tile, installing and varnishing doors and painting. The ladies also cleaned windows, sorted out the clothes in the storeroom and did crafts with the children. Each night we enjoyed singing and devotions together in the cool night air. Thanks so much Page Pond and Bagdad Assembly for shining down on New Vision City of Refuge Children's Home.

Down and Dirty

Trinity Episcopal Church from Belleville, Michigan recently sent a hardworking, fun-loving team to work and minister at New Vision City of Refuge Children's Home. Led by Shawn Small and Eric Neubauer of Wonder Voyage Missions, this group had the envious job of hauling rock and digging dirt to help build our septic system! They also took all our kids on a picnic to Gouri Cave and went spelunking with the teens. A visit to the town of Christiana and game night filled out our week together.

Thank you, Wonder Voyage and Trinity Episcopal for a memorable week!

The Pittsburgh Healers

Recently a team from Calvary Assembly in Irwin, Pennsylvania (right outside of Pittsburgh) visited us at New Vision City of Refuge Children's Home. Pastor Todd and Sharon Neveu (classmates with us at Southeastern University of the Assemblies of God) led this wonderful group in work and ministry. They scraped, painted, cleaned, organized, did crafts and hosted a staff appreciation party. The staff was delighted with the hand crafted angel pins that the children made, the personalized gift bags, and all the generous items they received. The children especially enjoyed the bonfire and s'mores. Thank you Pastor Todd, Sharon, Nicoletta, Keziah, Courtney, Heather, Wendy and Phillip for your generous spirit and your kindness towards everyone at New Vision City of Refuge Children's Home.

Victory in Jesus

Recently, we had a wonderful team from Victory Christian Center in Terre Haute, Indiana visit us at New Vision City of Refuge Children's Home. Led by Pastor Dana and Jennifer Coverstone, this team ministered to our family, the 24 resident children and our staff throughout their stay. Working hard every day they installed doors and windows in our new boys’ dorm, motion detector lights outside our apartment and organized our clothing storage closet, as well as many other practical tasks.

Each day the team creatively ministered to the children through devotions and introduced them to Bible Quiz. Our staff was touched by their heartfelt ministry and prayers. The schools in the area were blessed by their ministry as devotions were delivered at two high schools and one elementary school. In fact the elementary school implored them to return the following week. The team graciously switched their fun day for the opportunity to volunteer at our health clinic and about 65 patients were cared for that day.
On a personal note, the team was extremely generous and gracious towards our family. My children were blessed by their thoughtful gifts but even more so by the loving attention and friendship they offered. Thank you Pastor Dana and Victory Christian Center. We look forward to your return next year!

The Kingdom of God is Near

When you enter a town and you are welcomed, eat what is set before you. Heal the sick who are there and tell them, "The Kingdom of God is near." Luke 10:8, 9
New Vision City of Refuge hosted a medical team this week to minister to the people of the surrounding community as well as to our children and staff.
Dr Charlie Sykes with the help of his wife Dottie, daughter Meredith, volunteer pharmacist Rebecca and our friend and fellow missionary, Nurse Peggy Pyatt (pictured) treated and dispensed medications to over 60 people per day.
Our daughter Olivia also helped out in the clinic, filling out forms and finding files for the patients. Each morning began with a worship song, prayer and a short devotion. Every patient remaining until lunch also received a Juicy Patti (Jamaican fast food). Young children were given a small toy to play with while they waited, prayer requests were taken, spiritual counsel was offered and free spiritiual literature was also handed out.

College Days

Stephanie and Krishana showcase their gifts at the ever popular talent show.
New Vision City of Refuge was visited by a wonderful group of students this past week. Evangel University once again blessed us with their presence for a week of ministry during their Spring Break. The 17 member team led by Ashley Higgins and Janelle Marengo with sponsors Virginia Sanders and Stephanie Barnes did a great job ministering to the children all week. They led devotions nightly at New Vision, did devos at a local high school twice and led the chapel service at the Assemblies of God Bible College here in Christiana. They worked hard painting our new dining room and just had a whole lot of fun with the children every day. We were blessed by their presence and their Godly influence will endure in the hearts of all they ministered to. Thanks, Evangel University for sending us your best!

A Hug from Home

Our home church, Fort Wayne First Assembly, blessed us recently with an all ladies team led by Chris Cormany and Nancy Williams. This wonderful group of women hosted some special projects and events for us at New Vision City of Refuge. As you can see in this photo, Sophia enjoyed the pleasant and relaxing Spa Day where we were pampered and treated to a special lunch and other goodies. A beautiful girls' tea was also enjoyed by all the girls at New Vision in which they received, among other things, their very own tea cup; as precious and as fragile as they. The Bible College students and staff were blessed by their chapel presentation and my three children were in for a special surprise as this ladies team did a wonderful make-over of their rooms. Thank you Fort Wayne First Assembly, we love you!

My Old Kentucky Home

New Vision City of Refuge student volunteer, Amanda Hacker and our daughter Olivia hang out together with Merlene.
Although the Kentucky District is not our home district when a missions team visited with us here recently it was like getting together at a family reunion. This wonderful group, led by Pastor Terry Moore and Pastor Gerald Hogan made a lot of headway on our new boys' dorm. Windows were installed, screens put in place, tile laid down and rooms were painted. Devotions, crafts and children's church also kept the kids happily occupied. We shared a lot of laughs and good meals but our sing along time, well, let's just say none of us will be joining the choir any time soon. Thank you Kentucky District for joining us on the field and partnering with us in ministry. Ya'll come back now, ya' here!

Tile was laid, windows frames were constructed and a whole lot of dirt was moved during the week they were here. The children enjoyed a birthday party hosted by the team and movie night which featured tons of popcorn was also a big hit.
Thank you Light House Assembly for lighting up our week once again!

Illuminated by the Lighthouse

"Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun." Psalm 37:5-6
A wonderful group of people from Lighthouse Assembly in Richmond, Indiana brightened our home with their presence this past week. The work team, led by Angie McCormick and Brenda Tudor and the ministry team, led by Keilah and Josh Holdeman were a force to be reckoned with as they worked and played hard to get so much accomplished. Bookshelves were built, the library was organized, equipment was repaired, the medical clinic was cleaned, our water heater was installed (yeah), rocks were moved, dirt was shoveled, and so on and so on. Everyday the kids enjoyed Vacation Bible School with games, videos and crafts to keep them occupied and challenged. Thank you Lighthouse Assembly for an illuminating week!

Simply Sachse

New Vision City of Refuge welcomed Pastor Gary Ellison and his young adult team from Sachse Assembly this past week. With hearts as big as the Lone Star State they hailed from, this group of young men and women ministered in a variety of ways. Testimonies were shared, skits were performed, children's church was presented and candy abounded all during their stay. A relay race, which challenged even the most multi-talented of our children, will not soon be forgotten. On the pratical side, a much needed wardrobe was also constructed to place in the boys' dorm. Thank you Sachse Assembly for a wonderful week.

Experiencing Life

"And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them." Mark 10:16
New life was breathed into New Vision this past week as a team from Community Life Center in Port Charlotte, Florida came to minister at our children's home. Led by student ministries pastor, Sam Lopez and children's pastor, Kiley Callaway, the team ministered in a variety of ways. Our medical clinic is now brightly painted and the rest of the girls' dorm received a fresh coat of paint. Throughout the week Pastor Sam and Pastor Kiley led the children to the Lord through exciting worship, meaningful prayer, and heartfelt preaching of the Word. Desiring to set an example to the children in the way of Christ the team served a wonderful meal at week's end and finished off with a special communion service.
Thank you, Pastor Mark Coffey, for sending such a wonderfully gifted team to New Vision City of Refuge Children's Home.
